Despite the Pandemic Period, Performance in the Agriculture Sector is Even Brighter

Jakarta, In the midst of a weakening national economy due to the corona virus pandemic outbreak, the performance of the agricultural sector actually looks brilliant so it is the only sector that saves the national economy. This is based on BPS data, that agricultural exports continue to show good performance, namely April 2020 agricultural exports of US $ 0.28 billion, up 12.66 percent compared to the same period in 2019 (YoY).

Based on the sector, only the agricultural sector experienced an increment in exports on a Year of Year (YoY) basis. Furthermore, BPS also released inflation data for May 2020 at a low position of 0.07 percent due to various factors, one of which was the support of food availability on Eid al-Fitr. Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Suhariyanto in his press statement explained that in January-April 2020 period, Indonesia’s non-oil and gas exports were dominated by exports of animal or vegetable fats and oils amounting to US $ 6.25 billion or 12.24 percent.

“This is a positive signal and a breath of fresh air where agriculture and its preparations show positive growth,” Suhariyanto said on Tuesday in Jakarta (2/6/2020).

Suhariyanto emphasized that the agricultural sector has a significant role in the performance of national exports. In addition, the nominal wage of farm labors also increased. Recorded in Month on Month (MoM) nominal wages in April 2020 rose by 0.12 percent from the previous month 55,254 to 55,318.

“However, real wages tend to be stable at around 52,214 and there are no significant changes,” he explained.

Furthermore, Suhariyanto revealed that inflation in May 2020 was at a low position of 0.07 percent due to various factors. Some of them are the readiness of the government in anticipating food demand for Idul Fitri. Low inflation, according to Kecuk also occurred because of the impact of the corona virus pandemic (Covid 19) which caused a decrease in demand.

In addition, Suhariyanto said, the existence of the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) policy also affected economic activities including demand for goods. PSBB affects the level of community income. So that public spending activities also declined.

During the corona virus pandemic, the agricultural sector was also able to increase the purchasing power of farmers. BPS recorded Agricultural Exchange Rates (NTP) in the livestock subsector increased by 0.27 percent or 96.66 in May 2020

Jakarta, Di tengah melemahnya ekonomi nasional akibat wabah pandemi virus corona, kinerja sektor pertanian justru terlihat cemerlang sehingga menjadi satu-satunya sektor yang menyelamatkan ekonomi nasional.

Berdasarkan sektornya, hanya sektor pertanian saja yang mengalami kenaikan ekspor secara Year of Year (YoY).
