Agricultural Sector in Quarter III 2021 Consistently Grows Contributing to the Indonesian Economy

Jakarta – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) released indonesia’s economic growth grew positively 3.51 percent year on year (y-on-y). Agriculture is one of the sectors that consistently contributes to economic growth, especially during pandemic times.

“In the third quarter of 2021, the agricultural sector grew 1.35 percent. Economically, 66.42 percent of GDP comes from industry, agriculture, trade, construction, and accretion,” BPS Head Margo Yuwono said during an online press conference on Friday (05/11/2021).

Based on BPS records last year, the agricultural sector keeps experiencing positive growth of 16.24 percent quarter to quarter (q-to-q) and 2.19 percent on a y-on-y basis in the second quarter of 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic.  For the growth of the agricultural sector in this period, Margo expressed the positive performance of plantation subsectors to be the main support.

“Plantation crops penetrated 8.34 percent driven by an increase in the production of some plantation commodities, such as palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and sugarcane,” he said.

The positive performance of plantation commodities also supported the growth of the processing industry, especially Food and Beverage industry (F&B). Recorded growth in the F&B industry of 3.49 percent was also supported by an increase in CPO (crude palm oil) production and its derivatives to meet domestic and foreign demand.  The trend of economic improvement is not only happening in Indonesia, but also the world. Margo revealed that the global Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) indicator in July, August, and September 2021 reached more than 50.

On a separate occasion, the Head of Public Relations and Public Information Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture) Kuntoro Boga Andri also highlighted the condition of the national and global economy that continues to improve. Kuntoro hopes that the global economic recovery can help boost Indonesia’s agricultural exports.

“During the pandemic, agricultural exports continued to grow positively. Of course, we hope that the economic recovery of Indonesia’s trading partners can be linear with the increase in our agricultural exports,” he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture, according to Kuntoro, will continue to strive to maintain the growth of the agricultural sector to always be positive and be a support for the Indonesian economy.

Jakarta – Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) merilis pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia tumbuh positif 3,51 persen secara year on year (y-on-y).
